In the particular industry I work in, there are not a lot of project managers with the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.  However, after many years of working in project management I have decided to take the plunge and have begun studying for the PMP exam.  I feel that this not only will make me more “marketable” in my career, but will also insure I have a good sound background of “best practices” in Project Management. Besides getting a copy of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) guide itself, if you commute (like I do), I would highly recommend subscribing to The Project Management PrepCast to provide you with the background and detailed explanation of PMBOK concepts.  Cornelius Fichtner, PMP is the host of The Project Management PrepCast and also hosts the popular Project Management Podcast (www.thepmpodcast.com). The Project Management PrepCast covers the concepts, tools, and techniques you need to understand and be familiar with to take the PMP Certification exam. The podcast covers material in the PMBOK Guide, and even includes necessary models, theories and formulas not covered in the Guide. Mr. Fichtner keeps the episodes lively and interesting with simple examples to help strengthen your understanding of various concepts.  Those concepts include:

  • The 9 Knowledge Areas from the PMBOK Guide:
    - Integration Management
    - Scope Management
    - Time Management
    - Cost Management
    - Quality Management
    - Human Resources Management
    - Communications Management
    - Risk Management
    - Procurement Management
  • Study tips
  • Exam day tips
  • The Project Management Framework
  • PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct

This “study-cast” is a series of standard episodes enhanced with regularly scheduled new episodes. Each of the podcasts averages about 20 minutes length and focuses on one project management concept or process. The series of these podcasts are available through Audible.com at the very reasonable price of $24.99 per subscription.  You can also download free sample casts from the www.pmprepcast.com website before deciding to subscribe.  My only minor gripe about the PM PrepCast is that although you can listen to each episode as often as you like, you are only able to download a few of the podcasts per week from www.audible.com.  My guess is that this is to prevent people (like myself) from waiting until the last minute to cram all the material in my head.  This means that it will take about 3 months before you will have gotten through all the podcasts, which is the time Cornelius recommends to take to prepare for the exam.  It is almost as if Cornelius wants us to understand the material, not just store it in short-term memory…  What a concept!

Bottom Line:

If you are considering taking the PMP certification exam, I highly recommend subscribing to this podcast especially since there really aren’t any other “pod-ready” PMP casts out there.   Although the instant gratification part of me would like to be able to have all the episodes delivered at one time rather than “trickled” out through www.audible.com, at $24.99 I feel it is a wise investment to help me in my study, even when I am commuting.  I give this fine prepcast 4 out of 5 milestones.
