It Was Bound To Happen Soon

December 16, 2009 @ Herding Cats from Glen B. Alleman

PM 2.0 is passe, now it's PM 3.0. Craig Brown (one of my favorite) speaks to how PM 3.0 is Coming Our Way.

I love the comment about the "self directed" and the question of "directed to what end?"

From direct experience we tried "self directed" not understanding the consequences. After a few weeks (maybe 6) we went back to externally directed and "self managed." The teams could selected who they wanted on their "team," what roles they wanted to play. But there were two roles we mandated:

  1. Score keeper - some one and only one person developed the team performance metrics
  2. The spokesperson - we wanted to hear the progress report from one person.
The team could all work together to develop this information, but the interface between the team and the regular organization - full Earned Value government contracting - had to be clear, concise and in a singlur voice. Just like all the other project teams led by Control Account Managers (CAMs)
