81: The Reward
May 16, 2008 @ The Tao of Project Management from P M Blogger
We finally had the debrief session with the second unsuccessful supplier. As expected it was a bit friendlier than the first. We have to wait another three days as the final part of the mandatory standstill period and the time drags by ever so slowly, while we all champ at the bit and want to get on with things. We start on the detailed planning next week and once we have that done I will be able to go back and talk to the schools and services to see how the dates will fit with their calendars.
The main problem now is the delay to the tendering process for the enabling work on the data cable ducts. Unfortunately this is on the critical path so we now have our first project issue. The buildings people are working on it and hope to be able to reduce the overall time for the work so hopefully we can claw back some time.
In a tranquil moment my mind drifted out to the end of the year when we will be able to assess how successful phase one of the project has been. I feel confident that the team will be successful; they are a great bunch of people.
The Way
The wise project manager is not trying to collect a string of successful projects to his credit. He is helping others to find their own success. There is plenty to go around. Sharing success with others is very successful.
The single principle teaches us that true benefit blesses everyone and diminishes no one. I know this for this is the way of the project manager.
The Tao
Lao Tsu tells us:
Truthful words are not beautiful.
Beautiful words are not truthful.
Good men do not argue.
Those who argue are not good.
Those who know are not learned.
The learned do not know.
The sage never tries to store things up.
The more he does for others, the more he has.
The more he gives to others, the greater his abundance.
The Tao of heaven is pointed but does no harm.
The Tao of the sage is work without effort.
