62: Whether You Know It or Not
January 4, 2008 @ The Tao of Project Management from P M Blogger
As well as getting over a rather nasty cold, I’ve spent this week starting to close down my company and getting ready to start my new job at the University of Exeter next week. The past ten years has taught me a lot about life, project management and the way. I hope the next three years at Exeter will do the same. Anyone can work things out for themselves. They do not need to be a great project manager or even part of a team to observe that life’s processes unfold naturally. Conflicts will resolve themselves sooner or later, whether or not a person knows how things happen. Even without the light of consciousness, people will grow and improve. So don’t abandon anyone just because they do not understand how things happen. The wise project manager is aware of how things happen and this makes their words more potent and their behaviour more effective. Knowing how things work gives the project manager more real power and ability than any number of degrees or titles. This is why people in every culture and time have honoured those who know how things happen. The wise project manager understands this; for this is the way of the project manager. The Tao Lao Tsu tells us: Tao is the source of the ten thousand things. It is the treasure of the good man, and the refuge of the bad. Sweet words cannot buy honour; Good deeds can gain respect. If a man is bad, do not abandon him. Therefore on the day the emperor is crowned, Or the three officers of state installed, Do not send a gift of jade and a team of four horses, But remain still and offer the Tao. Why does everyone like the Tao so much at first? Isn’t it because you find what you seek and are forgiven when you sin? Therefore this is the greatest treasure of the universe.
