60: Don’t Stir Things Up

A project manager needs to run his project delicately and allow the group process to emerge naturally. He must resist the temptation to instigate issues or elicit emotions that have not appeared by themselves.

The poor project manager stirs things up and releases strong feelings and evil forces before their time and under unwarranted pressure. This can result in the wrong emotions or chaotic forces being created that can strike out and hit any target.

The wise project manager knows that these forces are real and exist within the team. But he does not push, he allows them to emerge when they are ready and the time is right. When hidden issues and emotions emerge naturally, they also resolve themselves naturally. They are not harmful. In fact, they are no different from any other thoughts or feelings.

All energies arise naturally, take form, grow strong, come to a new resolution and finally pass away. This is the cycle of life, projects and of everything. The wise project manager understands this for this is the way of the project manager.

The Tao
Lao Tsu tells us:

Ruling the country is like cooking a small fish.
Approach the universe with Tao,
And evil will have no power.
Not that evil is not powerful,
But its power will not be used to harm others.
Not only will it do no harm to others,
But the sage himself will also be protected.
They do not hurt each other,
And the virtue in each one refreshes both.
