Elizabeth Harrin has a post with some interesting facts on project failure: Why Do Projects Fail? From a study done by the UK Office of Commerce, here are five causes of project failure listed in Harrin's post:

    • lack of clear executive leadership (the ‘missing’ Sponsor)
    • poor processes for identifying and managing risks associated with the project
    • a gap between the Project team, often with technical expertise, and the rest of the business, who often don’t understand the nitty gritty details
    • failure to take into account and manage the fact that humans naturally dislike change and the impact this has on business processes and people
    • project durations that stretch over a year, as the business environment evolves rapidly.

Interesting short list of common project pitfalls. Effective communication is critical to every project's success, and some of the items in list above could have been avoided if project teams had solid, open, timely communication. Another missing piece from the list is a strong project leader who can work with MIA sponsors and stakeholders as well as keep a handle on project processes (I'm all about "people over process"), manage risk and change and subsequent impacts, and generally keep the train on the tracks. As for the last bullet and long-term projects, the longer a project's life the more likely it is that the market and requirements will change. Of course, even doing these things right does not guarantee you'll have a successful project but not doing them increases your chance of failure!
