In project management, creativity tends to come from the interaction between opposites. If everyone on the project is in total harmony and agreement things will be very peaceful but there will be no spark. Getting the team sat round a table and discussing an issue or a challenge can often lead to sparks flying and that can be a very creative process.

This seems to be another aspect of the project manager acting in a facilitation role rather than driving the team. In some ways the good project manager is more of a follower than in leader. Their role is to foster and encourage the creativity in the team members. Trying to lead a team without having the humility to adopt a following role is a sterile form of management.

In order to lead the wise project manager learns how to follow. In order to prosper the wise project manager learns to run the project simply. The creativity comes from the interaction between the people in the team. Trying to get ahead by accumulating more and more will become a full-time career in itself and nothing will get done. Force others to do your bidding and you will be undone by it.

The way of the project manager is to follow others, to live simply and to encourage the creativity of others.

The Tao
Lao Tsu tells us:

One gains by losing
And loses by gaining.

What others teach, I also teach; that is:
“A violent man will die a violent death!”
This will be the essence of my teaching.
